During the dry harmattan months, hair breakage becomes very common. The cold, dry weather strips moisture from your hair, leaving it dry, brittle, and more prone to breakage.
While protective styles are often the go-to solution, hair care is frequently neglected once the hair is tucked away. Unfortunately, when the style is taken down, excessive shedding and breakage are often a reality.
CLARIFY: During the dry harmattan months dust is blown in from desert. This causes the hair and scalp to get dirty much faster than usual. Many customers ask for moisturizing shampoos or co-washes during this period. While these are not bad options, it is very important to get a shampoo that can properly remove dust and the heavy products we tend to use at this time of the year.
If the hair is not cleansed properly, it becomes impossible for moisture to penetrate the hair strands due to product and dust build-up. We recommend using our Vanilla shampoo once a month, especially if you regularly use heavy butters and oils such as shea butter, mango butter, and castor oil. This helps reset the hair, remove build-up, and prepare it to receive moisture effectively.
DEEP CONDITIONING (STEAMING): To achieve maximum hydration during the harmattan season, regular deep conditioning is essential. We recommend washing and deep conditioning your hair at least once every two seeks to prevent dryness and breakage. Our deep conditioners are harmattan-friendlyand suitable for all Afro hair types as well as relaxed hair.
LOCK IN MOISTURE: During harmattan, your hair needs a rich butter to properly seal in moisture after washing and deep conditioning. Light weight oils may not provide long-lasting protection during this season.
Our Vanilla Shea Twist Butter (see below) is formulated with rich butters, nourishing oils, and conditioning agents that help lock in moisture while leaving your hair soft, smooth, and beautifully shiny.
MOISTURIZE: With the drop in moisture levels in the environment, achieving twist outs and wearing your afro with minimal shrinkage can be very tempting. However, if your hair is not well moisturized by the end of the day, breakage is inevitable. To prevent this, we recommend a lightweight yet effective moisturizer like our Kimia Daily Moisturizing Leave in Conditioner . It has a high water content , blended with oils, ad smoothing ingredients that help hydrate , soften, and protect the hair strands.
This product is also ideal for when your hair is in braided extensions. With just a few daily sprays, your hair stays moisturized even while in a protective style- ensuring an effortless, breakage-free take-down when you are ready.
